Straight Bet

A single wager on one outcome -- a moneyline, point spread, or total -- rather than a parlay or combination ticket.

The straight bet stands as the most elemental wager in all of sports betting. At its core, it is a single position taken on one specific market: a moneyline winner, a point spread result, or a game total played as an over or under. In contrast to parlays, teasers, or round robins, a straight bet never bundles several picks onto a single ticket. The wager resolves cleanly, winning or losing on the outcome of that one market alone.

Every other wagering structure is constructed atop this foundation. Seasoned professionals and weekend bettors alike gravitate toward straight bets precisely because the arithmetic is transparent, the exposure is contained, and the assessment is uncomplicated. Before the opening whistle, you already know your exact potential return, and your fate does not hinge on a chain of separate results all breaking your way.

In American markets, the overwhelming majority of straight bets on spreads and totals are priced at the standard -110 line. Under that pricing you stake $110 to collect $100, with the surplus $10 functioning as the sportsbook’s commission, commonly called the vig or juice. Moneyline straight bets, by contrast, carry odds that float according to each side’s perceived chance of prevailing.

Example

You place a straight bet of $110 on the Philadelphia Eagles -3.5 at -110 odds. Should the Eagles prevail by 4 or more points, the ticket wins and you collect $100 in profit alongside your returned $110 stake. If they win by exactly 3 points or fewer, or lose outright, the bet loses and the $110 is forfeited. No other game or outcome enters the equation – there is only this lone wager on this lone spread.

Key Points

  • Single selection: A straight bet rides on exactly one outcome, with no extra legs or conditions that must also come through.
  • Three common forms: These wagers are most often struck on the moneyline, the point spread, or the game total (over/under).
  • Lower risk than parlays: Since only one result must land, straight bets win more frequently than multi-leg constructions.
  • Standard pricing: The typical spread or total straight bet is offered at -110, meaning $110 risked to win $100 before any line shopping enters the picture.
  • Preferred by professionals: Experienced bettors favor straight bets for the clarity of their edge calculation and the steadiness of their long-term results.
