An authoritative reference to betting terminology — clear, considered definitions of odds, markets, bet types, value concepts and bonus terms.
Odds & Fundamentals
Action
Any wager staked on a sporting event; also denotes that a bet is live, accepted, and eligible to be settled.
Against the Spread (ATS)
A team's record judged against the point spread rather than by who won the game outright.
Bad Beat
A wager that looked all but certain to win yet loses because of a last-minute or wildly improbable turn of events.
Cover
A team covers when it performs well enough against the point spread to produce a winning bet, not merely by winning the game.
Even Money
A wager whose potential profit matches the stake exactly — decimal odds of 2.00, fractional 1/1, American +100.
Favorite vs Underdog
The favorite is expected to win (lower odds, shorter price), while the underdog is expected to lose (higher odds, longer price).
Hook
The half-point attached to a spread or total (for example -3.5 rather than -3) that rules out the possibility of a push.
Implied Probability
The likelihood of an outcome as expressed by the betting odds, with the bookmaker's margin baked in.
Juice / Vigorish (Vig)
The commission a bookmaker takes on every wager, embedded within the odds rather than charged separately.
Moneyline
A wager on which team or player wins outright, with no point spread attached.
No Action
A bet that is voided with the stake returned, usually because of a postponed event, scratched player, or invalidated conditions.
Odds Formats
The three principal notations for displaying betting odds — Decimal, Fractional, and American (Moneyline).
Off the Board
A game or market the sportsbook has temporarily pulled from betting, usually because of uncertainty such as injuries or weather.
Over/Under (Totals)
A wager on whether the combined score of a game will finish over or under a set number.
Pick'em
A matchup with no favorite at all -- the spread sits at zero, so the wager reduces to nothing more than choosing the winner.
Point Spread
A handicap oddsmakers apply to even out the contest between the favorite and the underdog.
Push
A wager that finishes level against the spread or total, with the bettor's stake returned in full.
Straight Bet
A single wager on one outcome -- a moneyline, point spread, or total -- rather than a parlay or combination ticket.
Bet Types
Asian Handicap
A soccer-centric form of spread betting that removes the draw by applying fractional or whole-number handicaps to one or both teams.
Cash Out
A sportsbook feature that allows a bettor to settle an open wager before the event ends, securing a profit or capping a loss.
Double Chance
A soccer wager covering two of the three possible match results, trading lower odds for a markedly higher chance of winning.
Futures Bet
A wager on an outcome that will only be settled later, such as the winner of a season-long championship or a tournament title.
Hedging
Betting the opposite side of a position you already hold in order to guarantee a profit or trim your potential loss whatever the result.
Live Betting (In-Play)
Wagering on an event that is already underway, with the odds recalculating in real time as play unfolds.
Parlay (Accumulator)
A single ticket binding two or more selections together, where every leg must win before the wager returns anything at all.
Player Prop vs Game Prop
Player props wager on one athlete's output, such as passing yards; game props wager on team or match events, such as the first side to score.
Prop Bet (Proposition Bet)
A wager on a particular occurrence inside a game that need not have any bearing on the final outcome or scoreline.
Round Robin
A combination wager that spins multiple parlays out of a group of selections, covering various subset pairings.
Run Line / Puck Line
A sport-specific spread -- a fixed 1.5-run line in baseball (MLB) and a fixed 1.5-goal puck line in hockey (NHL).
Same-Game Parlay
A parlay in which every selection is drawn from a single game or event rather than spread across multiple contests.
Teaser
A parlay variant that lets the bettor shift the spread or total in their favor across each leg, in exchange for reduced odds.
Value & Strategy
Arbitrage Betting
Backing every possible outcome across competing bookmakers so that a profit is locked in no matter who wins.
Bankroll
The pool of money a bettor reserves strictly for wagering, walled off from everyday personal finances.
Buying Points
Paying for a friendlier spread or total by accepting steeper odds, often to clear key numbers like 3 and 7 in football.
Closing Line Value (CLV)
The gap between the odds you bet at and the final closing odds, widely treated as a yardstick for genuine betting skill.
Edge
A bettor's measurable advantage over the book, present when an outcome's true probability outstrips the probability implied by the posted odds.
Expected Value (EV)
The average sum a bettor can expect to win or lose per wager across the long run.
Fade the Public (Contrarian Betting)
A strategy of wagering against the side most recreational bettors back, on the premise that public sentiment manufactures value on the opposite side.
Kelly Criterion
A formula that prescribes the optimal stake for a positive-EV bet, scaled to your perceived edge and bankroll size.
Key Numbers
The margins of victory that recur most often in a sport, which makes some point spreads weigh far more heavily than others.
Line Shopping
Comparing odds across several bookmakers to secure the best available price on a given wager.
Matched Betting
A method that harnesses sportsbook promotions alongside opposing wagers to extract near-guaranteed profit with minimal exposure.
Middling
Wagering on both sides of a game at different spreads, hoping the final margin lands between them so both bets cash.
ROI (Return on Investment)
The percentage of profit or loss measured against the total amount a bettor has staked.
Steam Move
A sudden, sharp shift in a line driven by heavy betting action from professional bettors or syndicates.
Tout
A person or service that sells betting picks or predictions, frequently backed by inflated claims about win rates.
Units
A standardized measure of bet size relative to bankroll, used to track results and compare performance independent of dollar amounts.
Variance (in Betting)
The natural swing in results that arises even when a bettor consistently makes positive expected value wagers.
Market Terms
Betting Handle
The aggregate sum wagered on a given event or across a defined stretch of time.
Betting Limits
The smallest and largest stakes a bookmaker will take on a single wager.
Chalk
Betting slang for the favorite in a matchup; 'betting the chalk' means siding with the team or outcome expected to win.
Line Movement
A shift in the odds or spread after the opener is posted, prompted by betting action, injuries, weather, or fresh information.
Oddsmaker / Bookmaker
The person or firm that sets betting lines, manages risk, and accepts wagers on sporting events.
Opening Line / Closing Line
The opening line is the first set of odds released; the closing line is the final price before the event begins.
Public Betting Percentage
The share of total wagers landing on each side of a market, revealing where the bulk of recreational bettors have placed their tickets.
Reverse Line Movement
When a line drifts against the majority of public bets, signaling that sharp professional money has landed on the less popular side.
Sharp vs Square
Sharps are professionals who wager with an edge; squares are recreational bettors who tend to follow public sentiment.
Stale Line
Odds that have not yet absorbed new information such as injuries or lineup changes, opening a value window for alert bettors.
Bonus Terms
Bonus Bet (Free Bet)
A promotional wager funded by the bookmaker; a winner returns the profit but usually withholds the original stake.
Odds Boost
A promotion in which the bookmaker temporarily raises the odds on a chosen market, handing bettors enhanced potential returns.
Profit Boost
A promotion that lifts the profit portion of a winning bet by a set percentage, distinct from an odds boost that raises the odds themselves.
Qualifying Bet
A wager that must be placed to trigger or unlock a promotion, typically bound by minimum odds and stake conditions.
Reload Bonus
A deposit promotion extended to existing customers on later deposits, in contrast to a one-time welcome offer for new sign-ups.
Risk-Free Bet
A promotion that refunds your stake, typically as a bonus bet rather than cash, if your opening wager loses.
Site Credit
Non-withdrawable account funds that must be wagered to place bets, with the resulting winnings typically withdrawable.
Wagering Requirements (Rollover)
The total volume of betting a bonus or deposit must pass through, expressed as a multiplier, before any winnings can be withdrawn.
